Dance of the Skeleton

My buddy Neal and I decided that we were going to come up with a topic once or twice a month and each come up with a sketch to compare and critique. This first one was entitled, "Dance of the Skeleton." I don't know why I pulled that out of the air but it was fun. I'll have you know Neal that I did this after trick or treating with my kids. I remembered at the last second and forced myself to do it. I found a picture of Fred Astaire doing a cool pose and copied it as a skeleton. I'm sure it isn't anatomically correct but it was fun to kind of make up stuff to fill in the gaps. I need to find myself the perfect sketching pencil because this #2 school pencil I'm using isn't allowing a lot of contrast and the lead is hard. Skeleton's really don't have much expression but believe me, he's smiling ear to ear...

Here are some quick sketches I did of some cowboys I found in a scout magazine. I need to get myself some different reference.

Klopek... Is that Slavic?

Natali and I have a few favorite Halloween movies - Nightmare before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Charlie Brown but The Burbs is our absolute favorite and is probably the most watched film in our home. I drew his left hand and side too dark. It's distracting from the focal point. Better luck next time.

Summer Camp

Summer camp this year was up at Camp Loll near the south entrance of West Yellowstone. I tried my hardest to find time to sketch but hard when trying to keep track of those crazy boys. Here are some 3-5 minute sketches. This was probably the first time that I have drawn in a sketchbook in years. It's strange to look at my drawings and know what I need to work on but it's hard to remind myself when I am drawing. Bad habits I guess. Anyways, I was using a #2 pencil that I was sharpening with a knife so not much variation in line weight.

Hero scout

What I mainly want to use this site for is to post the gesture drawings from my sketchbook but every once in a while I will take a few minutes to add some detail. I have a lot to work on when it comes to learning greyscale values and line weight, but I have to start somewhere right?

I found this guy in a scout magazine and thought he fit the Scout Master bill perfectly. Whenever I show up to Summer camp or Klondike, I see a bunch of guys that look like this. This guy had a lot of character which makes for an easy sketch.

Me... an artist?

I've got myself a blog. I use to make fun of my wife for having one but thought it would aid me in becoming a better artist. To all my fans around the world (My wife and Mom) thanks for tuning in! Now I just have to create some art to post. Yeeha!
