My values

I realized the morning after I drew this that something I struggle with more than anything is values. I guess I just need better values... The picture I referenced had a distinct difference between her leg and her gymnastics top that didn't seem to translate to my drawing. Don't you hate when you have a specific goal you are shooting for but in the end you just give in to your bad habits? I do, 'cause I do it consistently.

A sure way to destroy a drawing is to go in afterwards and make corrections. That is what I tried with this and it just got worse and worse. It was fun though. Maybe I'll try it again and keep it under an hour to see if I learned anything.

Remember kids, keep your values!

looks good, that is a tricky perspective going in the legs.
I use Nu pastels usually or sometimes just charcoal or conte, but they don't erase as well.
Try using a paper towel. get the generals in and wipe the whole thing down, this will mute the values bringing the lights down and the darks up. Then just go into it, darkening the areas that need it and erasing to lighten the areas you wish to brighten, leave the rest alone. Repeat this process for the whole drawing, if there is a whole area like the upper body here just lightly go over it with your charcoal then wipe with the towel and go back in lightening and darkening and clean up edges.
give this a try and see if it helps.

Dave M.- Thanks for the tips and the great info.

Dave Malan is an artist whose website I stumbled upon and emailed with a few questions. He was nice enough and cool enough to not only email back but left comments on my blog. Dave, you're a stud. Thanks for being genuine.
